🍂 Your North Georgia Fall Bucket List

October is here, which means it’s just about time to trade the iced coffee for something slightly more seasonal.

North Georgia does fall pretty well - and with cooler weather, mountain views, apple orchards, festivals, and approximately one million opportunities to buy a pumpkin you absolutely did not need, there’s plenty to get out and enjoy.

So we put together a short list of 6 North Georgia fall activities worth adding to your calendar this month.

1. Get Lost at Buford Corn Maze

 📍 Buford

Perfect for: a quick local fall outing

You don’t have to drive to the mountains to get your fall fix. The Buford Corn Maze is right here in our backyard, with a giant corn maze, hayrides, pumpkins, and plenty of classic fall-farm fun. And when October gets a little spookier, there’s a haunted nighttime experience, too.

Fall activity level : 🌽🌽🌽🌽🌽

Distance from your desk: Very reasonable.

2. Make a Day of the Georgia Apple Festival

 📍 Ellijay October 10-11 & 17-18

If “fall” had a headquarters in Georgia, it might be Ellijay.

The 55th Annual Georgia Apple Festival takes over the Ellijay Fairgrounds for 2 weekends with hundreds of vendors, handmade goods, live music, demonstrations, fair food, and, of course, apples.

Pro tip: Make a full day of it and stop at one of the local orchards while you're in the area.

🍺 3. Go Full Oktoberfest in Helen

 📍 Helen Thru November 1st

Helen’s 56th Annual Oktoberfest runs through November 1st, with traditional music, dancing, food, and festivities at the Festhalle and throughout town.

And yes, lederhosen are optional.

🍁 4. Chase the Leaves at Sawnee Mountain

📍 Cumming

Perfect for: a Saturday morning

Want the fall colors without committing to an entire weekend getaway?

Head to Sawnee Mountain Preserve and hike up to the Indian Seats overlook. It’s close enough for a morning adventure, but the mountain views make it feel like you actually went somewhere.

Grab a coffee at Bread & Butter, wear shoes you can hike in, and go see what North Georgia looks like when the leaves start doing their thing.

⛰ 5. Spend a Weekend in Dahlonega

📍 Dahlonega | October 17-18

Dahlonega is already a great fall day trip, but Gold Rush Days takes it up a notch.

On October 17-18, the historic downtown will fill with more than 300 arts and crafts exhibitors and food vendors, along with live music, gold panning, a parade, children's activities, and Appalachian demonstrations.

It's also a great excuse to wander the square, grab lunch, explore the shops, and take the scenic route home. Speaking of...

🍂 6. Take the Long Way Home

 📍 North Georgia Mountains

Sometimes the best fall activity is simply going for a drive with nowhere to be.

Head north toward Blairsville, Helen, Dahlonega, Blue Ridge, or the surrounding mountain roads and make a day of it. Georgia's official tourism guide highlights routes like the Russell-Brasstown Scenic Byway and roads through Blairsville and Blue Ridge as especially good ways to experience fall scenery.

No itinerary. No meetings. No notifications.

Just a good playlist, a full tank of gas, and hopefully some colorful trees.

🍁 Your October Challenge

Pick one. Pick three. Pick all six.

And if you discover a North Georgia fall favorite that we missed, tell us about it! We’re always looking for the next place our community should explore.

Because work is important…

…but so is knowing when to close the laptop and go find some leaves.
